How Did We Get Here?

With Jeffry Denman, Joy is co-writing a new dance theater piece about The Donner Party. The piece explores the selfish and selfless choices the pioneers made in order to survive and how these choices were subsequently judged by society.

The piece is currently in development with Denman Theatre & Dance Company

The Card Players

Animated tintype by artist Karen Ostrom with text by Joy Tomasko. 
Featured in the 2016 group show:
Open (C)all: Up for Debate at the BRIC in Brooklyn, NY.
Awarded "Best in Show" by BRIC Curators

They collaborated on two additional tintypes that along with The Card Players were featured in the 2015 group show: Wild at Heart at Ball & Socket Arts in Cheshire, CT.
 

Karen and Joy met at The MacDowell Colony in the snow-filled winter of 2008 in which there was a wedding and a sweat lodge in the midst of writing and art-making.

To write this piece, Ari sent all the writers into the streets of Jackson Heights to ask strangers to tell us fairy tales from their childhoods. Laurita and her magical suitcase emerged from the story I was told.
